Packaging chemical products
01 / THE IDEA

Packaging is functional: it affects stability, safety and usability as well as appearance.

02 / EXPLAINER

The pack is part of the formulation

Packaging contacts cleaner for extended periods and may react to solvents, perfume, pH and heat. Leakage, swelling, cracking or odor changes can result from interactions with plastics or closures. Test bottles, seals, pumps and labels with the real formula rather than water alone.

03 / EXPLAINER

Practical checks before approval

Store filled candidate packs in representative orientations and temperatures, checking integrity, appearance and dispensing. Polyethylene stress-cracking methods may be relevant in some cases. Dosing, storage and warnings must remain clear and legible; packaging is a safety and use function as well as a visual identity choice.

ILLUSTRATIVE CASE STUDY

How would this be tested?

When choosing a plastic package for a fragranced cleaner, fill real candidates and store them in orientations relevant to transport and use. Inspect leakage, shape or odor changes, cracking and repeated opening or closing. Test spray or dispensing at different temperatures and compare closure or material alternatives. Failure of one plastic type does not disqualify every polymer; it demonstrates why the actual formula and pack must be evaluated together.

Practical evaluation checklist

01

Test compatibility and leakage after storage.

02

Review closure and dispensing ergonomics.

03

Make directions and warnings clear.
